Pitch Black takes the Mega Evolution era somewhere moodier, stranger, and—in the best possible way—a little more dramatic, with Mega Darkrai ex right at its center. The 120-card numbered checklist is satisfyingly approachable, but opening packs will not hand you 120 different cards in a neat row. Duplicates are part of the fun, while reverse holos, promotional cards, and sealed-product promos can turn a “master set” into a much bigger adventure. Before you dive in, choose the finish line that will make you happiest: all 120 numbered cards, every parallel, or the full set plus related promos.

Now for the part every pack opener loves: the chase cards. “Chase” is not an official rarity—it is our affectionate name for the cards that make collectors lean closer when the rare slot appears. Incredible artwork, a beloved Pokémon, scarcity, playability, or all four can create that magic. Darkrai is unmistakably the star here, but this set has plenty more personality. A friendly price reminder: it is easy to get swept up in launch-week excitement, but active listings, completed sales, and graded-card prices tell very different stories. A listing is what a seller hopes to receive; a completed sale is what somebody actually paid. Condition, centering, shipping, and seller reputation all deserve a look too. How to read the rarities

Main Set

Cards numbered within #001–#084, including standard Pokémon, Trainers, Energy, and the set’s Double Rare Pokémon ex.

Illustration Rare

Full-card art built around a Pokémon scene. Pitch Black’s run begins at #085 and rewards collectors who value artwork over raw competitive strength.

Ultra Rare

Higher-numbered full-art Pokémon ex and Trainer cards. These often revisit subjects already present in the main set with a different treatment.

Special Illustration Rare

Premium alternate illustrations in the closing portion of the list. These are usually among the most discussed pulls.

Mega Hyper Rare

The final gold treatment. Mega Darkrai ex #120 is the only card in this tier in the numbered list.

Here is one small habit that will save you a surprising amount of confusion: always track the card number as well as the name. Mega Darkrai ex appears four times—#048, #101, #116, and #120—and every version has its own place in the collection. Search only for “Mega Darkrai ex” and you may compare the wrong prices or accidentally order a version you already own. The number is your best collecting companion.

Which Pitch Black product should you buy?

• Booster display (36 packs): planning a big opening with friends—or simply love settling in for a stack of packs? This is the most generous format and makes cost-per-pack comparisons easy. Just remember that even a full display cannot promise a particular chase card.
• Elite Trainer Box: our favorite all-rounder for anyone who also enjoys the accessories. You get useful storage and play supplies alongside the packs; just check whether you are choosing the standard or Pokémon Center edition.
• Booster bundle (six packs): perfect when you want a satisfying little opening without a box full of accessories. Compare the delivered cost per pack with sleeved boosters before choosing.
• Build & Battle kit: a lovely way to meet the set through prerelease-style play, complete with a deck core and packs. Choose this one for the game-night experience rather than as a shortcut to a chase pull.
• Single cards: the kindest option for your budget when only a few checklist spaces remain. You give up the surprise of a pack, but gain the pleasure of knowing exactly which card is arriving.

Whichever product feels right, take a happy extra minute before checkout to confirm the name, region, factory seal, seller, return terms, and delivered price. A stock alert gets you to the door; the retailer page tells you what is actually waiting on the other side. A sensible collector strategy

1. Choose your checklist. Make the goal feel like yours. “Complete” can mean #001–#120, every reverse-holo parallel, or all the related promos too. Write your rule at the top of your tracker and enjoy every step toward it.
2. Open for fun, buy for precision. Give yourself a pack budget that leaves room to smile—even when duplicates appear. Once you reach it, compare the price of missing singles with the cost of opening more sealed product.
3. Track by card number. Names repeat across rarities, but numbers keep you confidently on course. They also make condition and price comparisons much easier.
4. Give launch prices room to breathe. Early supply can be thin while excitement is sky-high. Unless day-one completion is part of the fun for you, a little patience can reveal a much clearer market.
5. Enjoy the card before grading it. A valuable raw card is not automatically a top-grade card. Admire it, then check the centering, corners, edges, and surface under neutral light before paying grading fees.

One last collector-to-collector truth: no sealed product can promise Mega Darkrai ex #116 or #120, and nobody can promise what a card will be worth later. That uncertainty is part of the thrill, but it should never take away the joy. Collect the artwork and Pokémon you genuinely love, trust confirmed sales more than breathless social-media asking prices, and build a Pitch Black collection you will still be excited to open years from now.
